Devon and Cornwall food
photographer Guy Harrop is celebrating his success in an international Food photography Competition for the third year in a row.
Guy has just been
awarded a runner up, highly commended and two commended awards for his food
photography in the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2014. His image taken at last year’s Clovelly
Herring festival came 2nd in the Stockfood
Food Off The Press category and another, from a busy Bridgetown fish market
in Barbados, taken early one morning while on honeymoon, was highly commended
in the Food And Its Place category
(which Guy won last year).
This year’s competition
attracted over 6000 images worldwide and the judges included Israeli-born chef
Yotam Ottolenghi, David Loftus (Jamie Oliver’s photographer) and food critic
Jay Rayner.
Said Guy, “To
compete and actually win an award with my food photography on an International
level feels amazing. I feel very fortunate as this is the third year in a row I
have won awards in this competition, which is also in its third year.
The competition
is worldwide and the level of entries is very high and so diverse and far
afield. Photos entered come from literally every corner of the globe, so it was
just great news to win a second place with my picture taken at the annual
Clovelly Herring festival of a man holding smoked herring.
I am also very
pleased another entry I took of a fish buyer dressed up to the nines in a busy
downtown Barbados fish market in Bridgetown was highly commended in the finals.
I was on honeymoon at the time, so you can imagine my wife’s thoughts, when I
said we should catch a bus and go to a fishmarket at 5am in the morning!
Luckily she
said, lets go and she hates fish.
I think also
living on the edge of rural Exmoor and near the sea has a huge part to play in
my food photography. I am very
fortunate to be surrounded by hills and farms. Good quality local farm
producers are everywhere and the coast and access to fishing is only 20 minutes
from my house. I am very passionate about food from the sea. I love every
aspect of fishing and spent my childhood near the sea and I also love cooking,
I grew up baking cakes in my parent’s hotel in Lynton, Devon, so combining
these passions with photography seems only natural.
I have been a photographer for over 20 years now so have covered most
subjects for my clients and regularly see my photos published in National and
International publications. A lot of my work now tends to be food orientated regularly
working with producers, restaurants and luxury hotels across Devon and
Cornwall.”
Guy regularly updates his blog with latest
foodie shoots and can be contacted at www.guyharrop.com or 07866 464282

Devon PR food photographer Guy Harrop catching up with bakers preparing beautiful traditional hot cross buns in time for Easter.
A baker finishes the glaze on hot cross buns in time for Good Friday at East and West Bakery, Barnstaple, Devon UK. Traditionally buns had a cross on to ward off evil spirits and in the late 1600s, (after the English Civil War) only bread, cakes and buns made on Good Friday continued to bear a cross.
