Spring finally out on Exmoor as Snowdrop valley blooms

A carpet of snowdrops emerge showing spring is truly on the way in Snowdrop Valley on Exmoor.  They were originally introduced to the valley in the 13th century by monks from nearby Dunster as a symbol of Candlemas (2nd February) and for years the valley was kept secret by locals. Today thousands of visitors travel from all over the world to see the snowdrops which usually only last for 3 weeks. Knit in proves a success for North Devon Hospice

The campaign was set up to raise funds through sponsorship and get people knitting during a 2-hour sponsored knit across North Devon, then all the knitted patches are stitched together to make blankets.  Last years sponsored campaign raised over £15,000 for the North Devon Hospice. Battle of Torrington 1646 commemorative march marks anniversary.

Photo by South West press and PR photographer Guy Harrop 13/02/10. Cavaliers lead a commemorative march of the Battle of Torrington 1646 through Torrington, Devon at the weekend. The original battle in 1646 was the last major battle of the first English Civil war involving approximately 17,000 men; it is also significant in that it was fought at night and within the streets of the town itself. At the end of the battle the church, which the Royalists had used as a powder store, exploded; the church was destroyed along with much of the town.

Cornwall's Eden Project biome lights red to mark National campaign launch UK

Cornwall - The Eden Project's Mediterranean Biome lights up red at the beginning of National Heart Month by the British Heart Foundation. Various iconic landmarks across the UK have this week been lit red including Hadrian's wall and the London Eye as  the national campaign gets underway to raise awareness of the UK's number one killer - heart and circulatory disease.
